The Hmong Minnesota Student Association is a student organization based on the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. Founded in 1986, HMSA is meant to serve the Hmong student population and other underrepresented minority groups. We aim to support members of our community by promoting the Hmong culture with various events, workshops and programs.​
Our Mission
HMSA is established for the following purposes:

To promote, preserve, and advance the Hmong culture and heritage;

To help its members develop cultural, social, leadership, and communication skills;

To provide and/or direct academic assistance;

To provide awareness of post-secondary education to all students of any social identities;

To develop good relationships with and to educate the University community as well as outside communities about the Hmong culture;

To be a support group.
Our VISION
The 2021-2022 vision for HMSA is to acknowledge and celebrate our culture, as well as challenge adverse traditions that have been ingrained over the course of generations. We plan to build and reinforce cultural confidence by revisiting our history while recognizing our intersectionality as Hmong Americans. Our aspiration is to utilize our platforms to provide a safe space for the community to interact and provide differing perspectives, welcoming difficult conversations and acknowledging the strength in our stories. We intend to express that the Hmong culture is not rigid and fixed, but flexible and ever-changing.
Together, we will continue to blossom as a refined community, while embracing the roots from which we have grown.

Scientists have found that the root systems of trees do not extend far down into the earth, but rather, they spread out latterly. This allows for groups of trees—like those of a forest—to grow roots that are closely woven together. These interconnected trees are then allowed to share nutrients and even communicate with one another through their roots.

Just like the many trees of a forest, we hope to cultivate a community that can grow a network together, beneath the safety of each other's shade as we all search for sunlight.
